I’m somewhat in shock about having a teenage daughter. I don’t know if I ever got over the shock of becoming the mum of a teeny tiny baby, never mind an adolescent, who is taller than me.  Not that it takes much.

Yes, it is the greatest thing in my life, but in all honesty trying to arise this creature these days is no easy feat. Unless it’s horseback riding day, in which case, miraculously, this beautiful young lady is in the car, riding helmet on, smiling ear to ear, eyes sparkling, tapping her dusty riding boot and looking at me with that look.  The sort of look only a teenager can muster.

During the week though, its quite another story and so between the teenage awakening, or lack thereof, and my morning exercise thing, oh and the ironing I couldn’t get motivated to do the night before, mornings are ram-jam packed full, so we pretty much always make breakfast in the blender. I have come to love it.

I use many recipes out of a Super Smoothies cookbook, but I also make them up a lot, depending on what’s in season and what’s in my fridge or freezer.  Our favourite goes like this:

A couple of Bananas, a bunch of frozen mango, a chunk of frozen orange juice concentrate, some soy milk and mixed with some low fat soy milk, and some vanilla or a couple of sprigs of fresh mint.

What about you? Any favourite blender breakfast concoctions? Any tips for getting teenagers out of bed in the morning?  Any morning coping strategies (or lack thereof) to share?

The kids are grown and I’ve blocked out memories of trying to get them up in the morning :)

That smoothie sounds delicious. Maybe it’s time to start the day with a healthy option like that rather than my normal vat of coffee?

My fav smoothie: 1 or 2 small bananas, several small ice cubes, 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. spirulina, handful of fresh or frozen berries, hemp protein powder, Ryza rice milk, sometimes ground flax seeds, sometimes plain low or no -fat yogurt. Yummy!

uhg… don’t even mention shakes or whey protein powder (dry heaving commences)… pregnant + mum force feeding protein shakes… (dry heaveeeeeeeee). Normal shakes are good though, I’m not a breakfast person but shakes I can do. Yogurt, any fruit, organic milk and maaaplllee ssyyrruppp. :p

Oh, I can just see the protien shake force feeding…. but yes smoothie, or as Teeghan calls them foofies are so great and can be nutrient packed. Love the maple syrup idea – thanks for that – its rich in minerals so is a healthy sweetner.

Oh flax seeds is a great addition – good way to get Omega Oils and fiber – thanks for that Eileen.

I toss in a handful of spinach, to get some greens. For some protein I might add a dollup of hemp hearts, whey powder, tahini or natural peanut butter. Fresh ginger gives a nice fresh zing. Unsweetened Cranberry juice when I’m out of almond milk. Unsweetened chocolate almond milk with banana and tahini or PB are dreamy! I have one of those magic bullets, perfect for single servings, and when I’m late (often) I can put the lid on and drink in the car on the way to work! Triple love smoothies, my new favorite thing. Thanks for some new ideas, it’s easy to stick with the same ‘ole thing

    “throw-the-smoothie-on-a-teenager”

Simple steps for unsuspecting sleeping slumbering sloth-like Sharks.
(must say this like Julia Child)

Place the blender on unsuspecting, slumbering teenager’s nightstand.
    Add water.
    Add ice cubes.
Add gravel from driveway (only the small, round gray-black rocks from the parking lot of the Westarm Grill will suffice…)… (julia is very particular)

    Turn blender to hi.

(lovely…just lovely) (remember, said like Julia…)

If slumbering shark does not stir…

add wooden spoon, silverware, earrings, bracelets, socks (for fiber)..(preferably from under bed, as these are more age-ed.

Threaten to poor concoction into horse-riding helmet… or new purse… or riding boots…

If this still does not work… best trick in the book. recognized as “world-leading” “best practices”:

1 bucket of ice cold water. (preferably thrown from a distance of 6 ft.)

    (rinse and repeat if necessary)

I assure you once will suffice.
Threats are all that will be required in the future…

    thank-you,
    Julia C.

Maybe Uncle Dave, or Julia Child, or someone who doesn’t have to go on living with said teenager shoudl implement…. and I think the riding helmut should remain scarosanct (is that a word?)

frozen blendm of 4 not 5 berries
    frozen bananas
    organic yoghurt
    organic flaxseed oil
    organic maple syrup ( splash)
    organic lemon juice
rice dream to thin it out .
this is pretty much what everyone else has but the frozen part is necessary and “I do it in the Food processor” ( Julia accent)

this is our family favourite since AliKatz was a boo boo.

Also I have a not great morning teen as well, but getting her up early enough to bath or shower in the AM helps her as well as taking our dogs out for a walk wakes her up as well, she takes her camera to try catch our elusive sunrises.

4, not 5 eh? I like the sunrise camera idea, but we’re so far from that. Honestly she can’t carry on a coherent converation. I am quite sure she will become a copious consumer of coffee, but I am apprehensive to introduce caffiene.
